The Help by Quanda R. Graves

Let’s discuss the book that everyone is talking about; The Help written by Kathryn Stockett. The motion picture about the book was just released August 10th of 2011 and already like the book, it has gotten MAJOR buzz. Now, long before I heard of the movie a few of my friends (none of them knowing each other) were reading this book and they were ranting and raving about it. Though I have not read it yet I can’t wait to read it, however I am going to see the film, as well. You know usually the book is more extensive which is why I want both perspectives.

I was reading about the author and found that she was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi and her family had a black maid named Demetrie whom she loved very much, which has a lot to do with how and why this book came about. Very interesting.

For those who’ve read, now reading the book or saw the movie please contact me with your thoughts, I’d love to hear them because though this book has gotten rave reviews it has also sparked a bit of controversy; “A white woman in 2008—and a southern white woman at that writing in the voice of two African American maids?” Hmmm. You never know your comments/thoughts might just be posted on “Until’s Book of the Week Advertising Facebook Page.”
